Hello Bill.

Nice to hear from you. Yes - the transfer case is the same (not sure 100% similar) as in Willys and many, many more details in the Valp are made in the same manner as in Willysjeeps.

I didn´t  understand about the overdrive: do you have an overdrive at your Valp or do you ask about possibilities to mount an overdrive. Many Valpowners in Scandinavia are interested in overdrive to their Valps, so please - tell us what you know in this matter.

You can freely write in english - everyone will understand you.

best regards

I don't have an overdrive. The jeep people talk about one made by WARN. The patent is now owned by ADVANCED ADAPTERS. The unit bolts onto the place where one might attatch a PTO (power take off). It gives a 3:2 ratio and has synchro which means you could go 120kph and not blow your seals. Obviously you would have to build your own linkage.  The transfer case is a DANA18. The problem is that there are several versions of DANA18 cases that Willys used between 1944 and 1970. Spline length and number of gear teeth in the overdrive units vary depending on which version of the Dana 18 case you have. I suspect the Valps all have the same version and I'm guessing someone has already done this in a Valp since the gears are the same as a jeep and lots of jeepers have done it.  The part number on my transfer case doesn't match those discussed in the jeep forums but in their pictures it looks exactly the same. The overdrive unit is called a SATURN (no relation to the car of the same name). The good news is that I live about 30 minutes drive from where this technology was originally developed (Yakima). I will let you know if I can get it done.

Nice news from "over there". Wait ´til my friends read about your plans - they are very skilful and they know a lot about Valps and I think this discussion will be useful for you, as well as for us. You can also visit another forum for Volco-Terraincars and tell about your worries - it is visited mostly by collectors of VolvoTerrain-cars so may be they are not so interested in mounting "new" components into their cars. But iyt´s worth trying. The address is

and you can freely write in english.

I´m sure the discussion will be useful for you as well as for many Vovo-freaks in Scandinavia.

The transfer case on Valp is NOT the same as the one on Willys, its a similar case built on specs from Volvo…..

Volvo uses a reduction 1,36:1 in highgear, and i have never seen or read of a Willys with this box…..

The Saturn overdrive will not fit a standard Valp tranny….and the Saturn is NOT a "bulletproof" overdrive…..=)

Noon,

Good to know this before I waste my money! Is there an overdrive that will work for the Valp? How many gear teeth are there in the transfer case? I was going to take the cover off and count them when I thought it was the same as in a jeep (Dana 18) I guess some have 26 and some have 29. What do you suggest? Learn to love 80 kph ? (actually more like 70, I had to go to smaller tires to get it to fit in my garage)

Take the tranny from a Willys and swap them, its the easiest way to avoid an overdrive…..
Many of us have a winch on the pto, and a Willys tranny accept a Volvo pto…

That sounds like a good idea, but I'm a little confused. My power take off is on the back of the transfer case, not the transmission. I know less about jeeps than Valps, but it seems like there are a lot of different jeep transmissions. Is there one particular jeep transmission that works best for all Valps? Do I keep the transfer case that's there now and just replace the transmission? My Valp was probably built in 1967 but Volvo truck isn't certain about that. Where are you? Do you have a phone#? Is your name really Noon?

Hi Bill!

The PTO is on the back of the transfercase. I think it's just a glitch in translation
If I recall correctly, the TC on the Valp is a ZF50 if that will help you.

I think that it's basically a clone of the DANA 18 with reduced high.

I know that Willys owners over here swap the other way around as a cheap way to get a rock crawler.

Thanks for the info. There is a guy at the other end of my state who makes overdrive units for many different orv's. I have sent him some pictures with the pan and the pto cover off the transfer case. The gear that is attached to the spline coming out of the back of the transmission has 14 teeth. That is a little different alright.

The overdrive builder (herbtheoverdriveguy@yahoo.com) wants to know if there is any source for spare parts. He is looking for that 14 tooth drive gear. I've got some great pictures of the inside of my Valp transfer case . If anyone is interested in the pictures they can e-mail me at roby@elltel.net

here is what I call the "drive gear". It is what you see under the pto cover.
